The short answer

Ficar de + infinitive describes an agreement, arrangement, or promise to do something. Fiquei de ligar means “I said I would call” or “I agreed to call.” It often implies that the action is still pending or is relevant to the current conversation.

Use ficar de plus an infinitive for an agreement

The verb ficar changes with the subject and tense, while the next verb remains in the infinitive: fiquei de enviar, ela ficou de confirmar, a gente ficou de conversar. Learn the full pattern as a useful chunk.

Fiquei de ligar para o médico hoje.

I said I would call the doctor today.

Ela ficou de confirmar o horário.

She agreed to confirm the time.

A gente ficou de conversar depois da reunião.

We agreed to talk after the meeting.

Name who agreed and when the action should happen

The infinitive names the agreed action, while a time phrase supplies the deadline: fiquei de responder até amanhã (I said I would reply by tomorrow). This makes the expectation clearer without changing the core pattern.

Ficar de can refer to a casual plan or a more concrete commitment, so context matters. If a deadline is important, confirm it directly. Do not assume that the expression alone establishes a formal contract or guarantee.

Você ficou de me mandar o endereço antes do almoço.

You said you would send me the address before lunch.

O fornecedor ficou de entregar o material na sexta.

The supplier agreed to deliver the materials on Friday.

Ficamos de escolher um restaurante esta semana.

We agreed to choose a restaurant this week.

Compare ficar de with a future plan

Vou ligar says that you are going to call; fiquei de ligar emphasizes that you had agreed or said you would call. Both can refer to the future, but ficar de brings the earlier arrangement into focus.

If plans change, use a brief explanation and propose a new next step. This is especially useful in work messages, shared plans, and appointments, where someone may be waiting for a specific action.

Vou enviar o arquivo amanhã.

I’m going to send the file tomorrow.

Fiquei de enviar o arquivo amanhã.

I said I would send the file tomorrow.

Não consegui ligar hoje; tudo bem se eu ligar amanhã cedo?

I couldn’t call today; is it okay if I call tomorrow morning?

Follow up on an arrangement without sounding abrupt

To check on a pending action, ask Você ficou de…? and state the action neutrally. If you are the person who agreed, acknowledge it and give a realistic time. A specific update is more useful than an unclear promise to do it soon.

Você ficou de confirmar a reserva. Conseguiu?

You were going to confirm the reservation. Were you able to?

Sim, ficou combinado. Vou mandar a mensagem agora.

Yes, we agreed on that. I’ll send the message now.

Ainda não terminei, mas envio até as três.

I haven’t finished yet, but I’ll send it by three.

Put it into practice

Use ficar de + infinitive when you want to recall an agreement or promised next step. Add a time phrase to make the expectation concrete, and update the other person if plans change.
