Practise Brazilian Portuguese Expressions in Three-Turn Dialogues

Learn conversational expressions through a short exchange: hear a phrase, respond naturally, then add one useful follow-up.

The short answer

This Real Life Portuguese adaptation takes I Speak Portuguese’s expressions listening topic and adds a different practice format: short three-turn exchanges. The phrases below are original teaching examples, not a claimed list from the episode. Listen to the source for its own lesson, then use these dialogues to practise how a phrase functions in context.

Practise an expression as a response, not a vocabulary card

Start by identifying the situation: someone thanks you, proposes a plan, or says they did not understand. A conversational expression only becomes useful when you can recognize the moment it fits.

— Obrigada pela ajuda. — Imagina! — Se precisar de novo, me chama.

— Thanks for your help. — Don’t mention it! — If you need help again, call me.

— Vamos tomar um café? — Bora! — Você prefere aqui perto?

— Shall we get coffee? — Let’s go! — Would you prefer somewhere nearby?

— Não entendi a última palavra. — Sem problema. — Pode repetir mais devagar?

— I didn’t understand the last word. — No problem. — Could you repeat it more slowly?

Add one follow-up so the conversation keeps moving

Many learners memorize an expression but stop after saying it. Practise one natural follow-up: bora? can lead to a time or place; valeu can close a friendly exchange; imagina can invite the other person to continue. The next line shows whether you understood not only the phrase but also its conversational job.

Try reading both roles aloud, then change one detail such as the time, place, or reason. This makes the phrase easier to retrieve without treating a memorized dialogue as a script for every situation.

— Bora almoçar? — Bora. Que horas?

— Want to go to lunch? — Sure. What time?

— Valeu por avisar. — Imagina. — Até amanhã!

— Thanks for letting me know. — No problem. — See you tomorrow!

— Você pode me explicar essa expressão? — Claro. — Obrigado!

— Could you explain this expression? — Of course. — Thank you!

Put it into practice

Use short dialogues to practise an expression’s role and the response that follows it. The I Speak Portuguese episode supplies a listening prompt; these new examples turn it into contextual speaking practice.
