The short answer

Do nada means “out of nowhere” or “all of a sudden.” It introduces something that seems to happen without an obvious warning. The expression is conversational and especially common when telling a short story.

Use do nada for an unexpected event

Do nada often appears near the start of a clause, followed by a comma in writing. It can also appear later in a sentence. The unexpected event comes from the rest of the sentence, not from nada by itself.

Do nada, começou a chover muito forte.

Out of nowhere, it started raining heavily.

A luz apagou do nada durante o filme.

The lights went out all of a sudden during the movie.

Ele me mandou uma mensagem do nada.

He sent me a message out of the blue.

Compare do nada with de repente

Do nada emphasizes that an event felt completely unexpected. De repente is a flexible alternative meaning “suddenly”; in some casual contexts it can also introduce a possibility. If you need a clear “maybe,” talvez is more direct.

Neither phrase necessarily explains why something happened. Add the surrounding context if the cause matters: the power went out during a storm, for example, rather than simply saying it happened do nada.

De repente, o cachorro começou a latir.

Suddenly, the dog started barking.

Talvez a gente possa conversar amanhã.

Maybe we can talk tomorrow.

Do nada, o telefone começou a tocar.

Out of nowhere, the phone started ringing.

Put it into practice

Use do nada for a surprising event that appears without warning; use talvez when you mean ‘maybe’ and de repente when you mean ‘suddenly.’
