The short answer
Conhecer means to know or be familiar with a person, place, or subject. It can also describe meeting someone for the first time: conheci a Ana numa festa (I met Ana at a party). With a person, the context tells you whether the relationship is new or established.
Use conhecer for familiarity and first introductions
Use conhecer alguém when you mean you know that person. For a first meeting, add the moment or setting if it helps: conheceram-se no trabalho (they met at work). In Brazilian Portuguese, conheci is the ordinary past form for ‘I met’ in this sense.
Você conhece a minha irmã?
Do you know my sister?
Conheci o Rafael durante uma viagem.
I met Rafael during a trip.
Ela conhece bem Salvador.
She knows Salvador well.
Use encontrar for finding or meeting up
Encontrar means to find someone or something, and it can mean to meet or meet up with someone. The phrase encontrar alguém no café can describe meeting someone there, often because the meeting was arranged or the place is the focus.
Context is important because English uses ‘meet’ for both a first introduction and a planned meeting. For a first introduction, conhecer is usually the natural choice; for a scheduled catch-up or locating someone, encontrar is often clearer.
Vou encontrar meus amigos depois do trabalho.
I’m meeting my friends after work.
Encontrei meu celular dentro da mochila.
I found my phone inside the backpack.
A gente se encontrou perto do metrô.
We met near the subway.
Put it into practice
Use conhecer for being familiar with someone or meeting them for the first time. Use encontrar for finding someone or meeting up; the setting and context help show which meaning is intended.
