How to Agree or Disagree Politely in Brazilian Portuguese

Move beyond sim and não with phrases that show agreement, qualification, or a different point of view.

The short answer

Concordo means I agree. You can add a reason with porque or show enthusiasm with exatamente (exactly) and faz sentido (that makes sense).

Show clear agreement

A short reaction can keep the conversation moving. Add one specific detail if you want to show what you agree with.

Concordo com você.

I agree with you.

Exatamente, foi isso que eu pensei.

Exactly, that’s what I thought.

Faz sentido porque o lugar fica perto.

That makes sense because the place is nearby.

Agree with part of an idea

If you partly agree, say em parte (in part) or entendo esse ponto (I understand that point), then explain what you would add.

This lets you acknowledge the other person’s idea without pretending that you share the entire opinion.

Concordo em parte, mas vejo outro lado.

I partly agree, but I see another side.

Entendo esse ponto. Também precisamos pensar no prazo.

I understand that point. We also need to think about the deadline.

É verdade, embora eu tenha uma dúvida.

That’s true, although I have a question.

Share a different view respectfully

Use eu vejo de outro jeito (I see it another way) or não tenho certeza se concordo (I’m not sure I agree) to introduce a difference without attacking the person.

For more ways to express an opinion and ask a follow-up, read our separate guide to sharing your opinion in Portuguese.

Eu vejo de outro jeito.

I see it another way.

Talvez, mas acho que há outra opção.

Maybe, but I think there’s another option.

Não tenho certeza se concordo com essa parte.

I’m not sure I agree with that part.

Put it into practice

Practice one full agreement, one partial agreement, and one respectful disagreement using a topic you know well.
